493 An historically important 19th century pedestal desk, constructed on Norfolk Island (New Zealand) reputedly for the Missionary Bishop of the Melanesian Islands, John Coleridge Patteson, passing on his death to his cousin, the Victorian novelist Charlotte Yonge. Constructed in the Victorian style of native timbers to the New Zealand islands, the top inlaid with a variety of timbers An old handwritten sheet to the centre drawer line states: '...entirely his own carpenter who worked building fathers house in 1866, went down with Bp Patteson to N I (Norfolk Island), and has been with ....off and on ever since. The top and parts of the drawers are of yew and mottled kauri. The sides are made from a log of cedar which John Adams found up on Philip Island. The top was inlaid by my father's old Captain, champion who now....on Norfolk Island and who took infinite pains with it... Made in Norfolk Received May 188....from the Bishop of Melanesia...' £800-1000
